STEM Resources
Have questions about accessing STEM resources at UCSC? Read below!
What majors are considered "STEM"?
UCSC's STEM majors are housed in two campus divisions: the Baskin School of Engineering (BE) and the Physical & Biological Sciences Division (PBSci). Each division has its own advising and support resources, so if you're unsure what division your major is under, check this list of departments:
The departments under BE are:
- Applied Mathematics
- Biomolecular Engineering
- Computational Media
- Computer Science and Engineering
- Electrical and Computer Engineering
- Statistics
- Engineering Management Programs
The departments under PBSci are:
- Astronomy & Astrophysics
- Chemistry & Biochemistry
- Earth & Planetary Sciences
- Ecology & Evolutionary Biology
- Mathematics
- Microbiology & Environmental Toxicology
- Molecular, Cell, & Developmental Biology
- Ocean Sciences
- Physics
- Biomedical Sciences & Engineering
- Coastal Science & Policy
- Global and Community Health
- Science Communication
What resources and programs are available to EOP STEM students?
EOP STEM Counseling
EOP STEM students have access to counselors who work collaboratively to facilitate academic and personal success at UCSC. Counselors will listen to your story, and build upon your strengths and goals to ensure you are successful in your STEM major.
Students can make appointments with an EOP STEM Counselor to get help with:
- Campus navigation & resources
- Problem solving strategies
- Advising & referrals
- STEM success & career development
EOP STEM Workshops and Events
Each quarter, EOP STEM Counselors and Peer Success Coaches host workshops and events targeted at EOP STEM students, but they are open to anyone! Examples of events include: advising pop-ups with Baskin Engineering, workshops on time management, studying for STEM midterms, and STEM communication.
MESA Engineering Program
MESA supports students who are first-generation to college and/or underrepresented in STEM fields, with dedicated study spaces, academic and personal advising, technology access, events, and opportunities for students.
What other programs support STEM students?
Academic Excellence Program (ACE)
The Academic Excellence program offers interactive problem-solving sessions that supplement gateway coursework in math, engineering, physics, biology, and chemistry. Students apply for these supplementary sessions outside of lectures/discussions for their classes. ACE also has weekly peer mentoring sessions that promote STEM success, led by students that have previously succeeded in the classes they are supporting.
Learning Support Services (LSS)
Learning Support Services is UCSC’s undergraduate tutoring center serving over 100 courses per quarter, including many key STEM classes, and over 3000 students per year. LSS offers group & individual tutoring, supplemental instruction, study halls, and more that support STEM students and classes. Their tutoring programs are proven to increase student success. Look out for LSS tutors in your course syllabus or in-class announcements!
LSS is also partnered with EOP for the Peer Success Coaching program! While EOP STEM coaching only serves students who are both EOP and in a STEM major, LSS's program serves all students.
Academic Advising
Each UCSC college, division, and department offers academic advising. Students can make appointments with their college advisors to discuss topics such as general education requirements, graduation requirements, and enrollment; and students can make appointments with major/minor advisors within their departments to discuss topics like major/minor declaration, course planning, and opportunities related to your field of study.
